What is Microchipping?
Microchipping is a simple procedure of implanting a tiny identification chip under your pet’s skin around the scuff of the neck. The chip contains your pet’s unique identification number that can be scanned by a microchip reader. In case your pets get lost the chip, although it’s not a tracking device, will help you reunite.
Why is Microchipping your pet important?
Unlike collars and tags, which break or get lost, a microchip is a reliable way of finding your pet if it gets lost or stolen. According to the UK Government’s official website, dogs have to be microchipped and registered on a database by the time they are eight weeks old, and from June 10, 2024 cats have to be microchipped by the time they are 20 weeks old.
When is the best time to microchip your pet?
You should microchip your pet at a young age, ideally during their first visits to our clinic. However, it’s never too late to ensure your pet is safe. We recommend microchipping cats when they are being neutered.
What does a microchipping appointment include?
The microchipping is a quick, almost painless procedure which doesn’t require anaesthesia. Once the chip is gently implanted beneath your pet’s skin, we will register the microchip information with a UK Pet Microchip Database to make sure your pet’s identification is up-to-date.
How can you update your pet’s microchip when you change your address?
Most microchip registries allow the owners to update their information online or over the phone. Your pet’s microchip information is registered in their microchip certificate, passport, or insurance papers or we can provide it to you if the microchip has been fitted at our clinic.
